For most of us, summer is underway and we are busy trying to keep our children occupied while we work. If we are lucky, we will be able to squeeze in a small vacation that won't break the budget.
Now is the time to plan ahead. School shots, physicals, uniforms, summer reading lists, etc...
Make appointments now - if your child is entering kindergarten, 7th grade and 9th grade - check to make sure they are up to date on their shots. In many cases, you will also need a physical. Check with your local chiropractic offices to see if they offer school physicals at a discounted price.
Check with your school about uniforms, summer reading lists and school supplies. If you need uniforms, check out stores. You can get a lot of deals at the beginning of summer for shirts, pants, etc. Don't worry if your children hit a growth spurt because you can always take it back for a better size -
Did your child bring home a summer reading list? Now would be a great time to hit the library together to do some reading. Your kids will be ahead of the game, you will share some quality time and you teach your child the importance of recycling (borrowing instead of buying). If your child didn't get a list go on line and print one out for the appropriate grade. Your school district website should have one. If not, Google in "reading lists for ___ grade"
Let's take the anxiety out of summer. Happy Reading.
I encourage you to post your summer plans and suggestions for keeping our kids busy on this blog - remember, it takes a village to raise a child - and we all have things that can be shared

Happy Summer Vacation
We have made it through another school year. Transitions, new friends, old friends, peer pressure,
FCAT, testing, sports, games, dances, bullying, parent conferences, PTA, school board, etc. And that's just the half of it.
So everyone is ready to let their hair down and enjoy the summer?????
Not really, in this day with this economy, we need more hours in the day to make sure that our children are safe and taking the short path to destruction. Camps are too expensive not to mention inconvenient when you work from 9 to 5 but the pick up time is 3. The internet is too dangerous - with Facebook, Twitter, Skype, Oovoo, etc. you need a class on survival in this tech world.
It's never too late to make summer a learning experience and a training camp for next year. Whether your child is just entering school, going on to a higher grade, recovering from a setback, transitioning from elementary to middle school or middle to high school or even high school to college; we can help prepare them for a bright future.
If your child struggled on the FCAT - summer is a good time to work on those skills. No matter how many rumors have gone around that the FCAT is going away, truth is --it has not gone anywhere. If your child had a successful school year, why not help them get a head start for next year. Remember teachers carry the torch during the school year but parents set the foundation
There are a lot of inexpensive but educational and fun things to do with your kids - get a library card, take them on a science adventure at the beach and search for shells, go to the zoo, learn about another state or country on a trip or learn about the state you live in, go to the museum, go kayaking and learn about wildlife. Whether you learn a new language together, take up a new sport or simply hang out; our kids need our time because if we don't take it out someone else will.
